ZAMBOANGA CITY –One person was killed while two others were injured when one of the compressors at an ice plant here exploded while being fixed on Friday.

Senior Supt. Luisito Magnaye, the city police director, said electrician Noel Eloreg, 36, died when the compressor he was fixing inside Ligmarine Corp. in Barangay (village) Campo suddenly exploded around 12 noon.

Two others, identified as Rovic Camohoy and Erlyn Sanchez, sustained injuries from the blast.

Magnaye said authorities were still trying to determine what caused the compressor to explode.

Most compressors used in industrial ice-making are filled with such gases as ammonia.

Ammonia is not highly flammable but its containers might explode when exposed to intense heat due to pressure build up./rga
