4 miners killed, 3 missing in Agusan del Norte landslide

MANILA, Philippines — Four miners were killed while three are still missing after a landslide hit Mount Manhupaw in Agusan del Norte during the onslaught of Tropical Depression “Amang,” police said.

The Police Regional Office 13 (Caraga) reported on Thursday that the victims were mining in the area when the landslide occured on Sunday, Jan. 20.

Police identified the fatalities as Rene Gan-ungunIligan, Ramil Naño Iligan, Casiano Tagunsulod Iligan, and Tata Salasay.

Meanwhile, search and rescue operations are still ongoing for the remaining three victims identified as Rex Penig, Jay-ay Matanog, and Gang-gang.

Only one miner named Alan Daging survived the incident but could not give details yet on the landslide due to injuries he sustained, police said.

Chief Supt. Gilbert Cruz, director of the Caraga police, told INQUIRER.net that rescuers are struggling to retrieve the remaining victims in the still rain-soaked area. /je
