MANILA, Philippines — Seven persons from the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH) in Mandaluyong died of COVID-19 in March alone following a surge in infections wherein 152 tested positive for the virus, Mayor Carmelita Abalos said yesterday.

Abalos said the NCMH was previously doing well and even registered zero cases last March 1. However, the situation took a turn for the worse in the past month.

The NCMH is located in Barangay Mauway, which has the most number of active COVID-19 cases in the city at 193.

Abalos said the seven are among 26 from the NCMH who succumbed to the virus since last year. She did not disclose whom among the fatalities were patients.

At least 835 from the mental health institution have contracted COVID-19. Of the number, 658 or 78.70 percent of the patients have recovered.

There are 1,294 active COVID-19 cases in Mandaluyong as of Saturday. Apart from Mauway, the other barangays with the most number of cases are Addition Hills with 133; Plainview and Barangka Ilaya, 90 each; and Hulo, 79.

At least 10,534 individuals from Mandaluyong have contracted COVID-19 since last year, with 270 deaths.
