MANILA, Philippines — Four nuns from a Carmelite convent in La Paz District in Iloilo City have died of COVID-19.

Jaro social communications director Fr. Angelo Colada said the fatalities are among the 33 residents of the monastery who contracted the virus.

“Seven ang dinala sa ospital kasi nagpapakita ng symptoms,” Colada said in an interview over Catholic church-run Radyo Veritas.

One of the nuns died on July 31, one on Aug. 3 and two on Tuesday.

Colada said some of the priests and employees of the monastery who tested positive for the virus are still recuperating.

He said those whose swab tests yielded negative results remain quarantined for close monitoring.

Forty-five residents of the monastery underwent swab testing on July 24 after they were exposed to a nun who tested positive for COVID-19.

The Iloilo City government locked down the monastery on July 25.
