Stricter HIV/AIDS screening for OFWs set

MANILA, Philippines — Clinics screening overseas Filipino workers for work in the Middle East have pledged to institute stricter testing procedures amid reports of a rising number of OFWs with HIV/AIDS abroad, an industry group said.

The GCC Accredited Medical Clinics (GAMCA) said it recently presented to Ambassador Mohammed Amen Wali, Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to Manila, a more stringent test procedure for AIDS/HIV.

Seventeen Manila Gamca clinics will be applying the new test procedures on Filipino workers applying for work visas to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Oman.

The umbrella group said it intensified cooperation with the health department to test samples from suspected HIV/AIDS carriers. Gamca also vowed to disseminate information about HIV/AIDS to OFWs through lectures and booklets. –Kristine L. Alave, Philippine Daily Inquirer
