Asbestos diseases

Published by rudy Date posted on September 24, 2001

The main symptoms of asbestos-related diseases include shortness of breath, coughing, chest pains and nail abnormalities, such as ridges or white streaks developing on finger and toe nails.

There is no cure for asbestos diseases, but, as severity depends on the length of exposure and amount of asbestos dust inhaled, early identification through chest x-ray can prevent worsening of conditions.

Around 75% of the people who develop mesothelioma die within one year of diagnosis.

Mesothelioma can take between 20 and 40 years to develop after exposure to asbestos dust. –BBC World Service http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/sci_tech/highlights/010924_asbestos.shtml
